Stefania Croci

I graduated in Medical Biotechnology at the University of Bologna in 2000. In 2004, I obtained a PhD in Oncology at the University of Bologna with a thesis on cancer immunoprevention in multigenic mouse models. In 2021, I obtained a board certification in Clinical Pathology and Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

From 2000 to 2012, I was trained in an academic environment: the Laboratory of Immunology and Biology of Metastases, University of Bologna, headed by Prof Pier-Luigi Lollini, Patrizia Nanni and Carla De Giovanni. At that time, I developed a strong interest in the modulation of the immune system for cancer prevention and therapy. I acquired expertise in vaccines for HER-2+ breast cancer, in the metastatic potential of cancer cells and in profiling molecular mechanisms driving cancer progression.

In May 2012, I joined the Laboratory of “Autoimmunità Allergologia e Biotecnologie Innovative” at the Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale-IRCCS, Reggio Emilia where I started to work on immune-mediated diseases in close collaboration with the Unit of Rheumatology directed by Prof Carlo Salvarani.

Since 2015 I have had the assignment to coordinate the research activities of the Laboratory, focused on Giant Cell Arteritis, Takayasu arteritis, Behcet's disease, ANCA-associated vasculitis, dermatomyositis, non-infectious uveitis, inflammatory diseases of the lungs, COVID-19 and the characterization of immunomodulatory actions of mesenchymal stem cells in autoimmune diseases. In addition, the effects of inflammation on the expression of immune checkpoints and the links between autoimmunity and cancers are under investigation.

I am the referent for research within the “Rete delle Malattie Immunomediate” at AUSL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia.
