Dott.ssa Lucia Merolle

Dott.ssa Lucia Merolle, PhD, Senior Scientist

Lucia Merolle is senior scientist with a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology (2011) and a PhD in Biochemical and Biotechnological Sciences (2015) from Bologna University.

During her PhD she demonstrated a direct relationship between magnesium and apoptosis by conducting independent research to examine the role of Mg and MRS2 protein in the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis and the establishment of drug resistance phenotype.

She won a travel Marco Polo scholarship at Freie Universitat, Berlin, Germany where she learned cloning and molecular biology techniques.

She worked as post-doc at Elettra Synchrotron, Trieste, Italy where she supported the development of new life science and biological applications of X-ray microscopy with particular attention to single cell analysis, cancer research and radiation damage.

In 2017 she started a collaboration with the Unit of Pathological Anatomy and Oncology of the AUSL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia in order to study the biochemistry of tumours with particular attention to the biochemistry of Mg and its transporters.

She is currently pursuing her research activity at the BioMetLab of AUSL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia involving colon cancer and ion homeostasis. She is also involved in transfusion medicine research projects.

Dr. Merolle co-authored 33 publications on international journals and in 2018 taught General Chemistry at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. She is economy and politics enthusiast and recently gained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.
