Gloria Manzotti

I graduated in Medical Biotechnologies at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in 2008. During my thesis intership with Prof. Calabretta I had the opportunity to develop my thesis project at the Thomas Jefferson University (Philadelphia, USA). There I studied an alternatively spliced form of the transcription factor c-Myb and its role on tumorigenesis of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. In 2012, I obtained my PhD in Clinical and Experimental Medicine, at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, with a research that extended and completed my Master degree thesis project. Subsequently, I won a three-years fellowship from AIRC (Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro) for a project concerning the study of the transcription factor C/EBPα as a potential therapeutic tool in Myeloid Leukemia.

Since 2015, I am a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory of Translational Research at the AUSL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia. I started my collaboration with Dr. Ciarrocchi by taking part in different research projects, focusing on two main topics. On one hand, the characterization of functional genomics features promoting aggressiveness of thyroid cancers, with particular attention to non-coding DNA elements. On the other hand, I pursued my interest in translational biology investigating the effects of HDAC inhibition in thyroid cancer and applying a drug repurposing approach in Pulmonary Sarcomatoid Cancers thus identifying a possible ready-to-use treatment.

In the last years, I have progressively acquired independence and now, as a Senior Scientist my research interests are focused on three main topics:

  • to study the transition from well-Differentiated Thyroid Cancer to Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer from a molecular point of view and by applying a Drug Repurposing approach to identify new therapeutic options
  • to investigate the molecular basis of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma and identifying new druggable targets to define new patient-tailored model, through the establishment of a biobank primary cells culture
  • to study the interaction between Triple Negative Breast Cancer cells and immune system and the resistance mechanism to immune therapies by exploiting cancer-derived organoids
