Mariaelena Pistoni

I graduated in Biology at the University of Parma in 2002. I then moved to the European Institute of Oncology (Milan) to pursue a PhD in Molecular Biology at the laboratory on the characterization of a novel chromatin-associated Ras-like Protein (L11A) in the regulation of rDNA transcription. After obtained the PhD, I spend few years at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute (Milan) where I focused on the role of Rbfox1 and altered splicing in a mouse model of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD). In 2011, I moved to the Stem Cell Institute in Leuven (Belgium) where I investigated the potential of stem cells in human disease. During this period, I developed an interest in how changes in cells metabolism can modulate and guide stem cell differentiation. From 2015, I am a Senior Researcher in the Laboratory of Translational Research at the AUSL-IRCCS in Reggio Emilia. Currently, together with my colleague dr. Teresa Rossi, we are opening a new line of research focused on tumor metabolism, in particular lipid metabolism, and changes in mitochondria dynamics in the field of breast cancer, studying the association of these mechanisms with tumor progression and metastization.
