Valentina Sancisi
I obtained my Master degree in Biology in 2002 and the PhD. in Cellular Biology and Physiology in 2006 at the University of Bologna (Italy). I carried out a significant part of my PhD project at New York University (USA) in the laboratory of Prof. Claudio Basilico, where I acquired a solid background in basic and advanced molecular biology. Then, I moved to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy), where I focused my studies on human molecular genetics and I developed a strong interest for translational studies.
From 2011 to 2015 I was a PostDoc fellow at the Laboratory of Translational Research at AUSL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia, where I studied the molecular mechanisms that control tumor aggressiveness and response to anti-cancer drugs. On this topic, I contributed to identify a new molecular program controlling these processes in thyroid tumors. My research activity in oncology also covers genetic and genomic characterization of thyroid cancer and melanoma.
In 2016, I started to develop my own research lines focused on the identification of novel therapeutic targets and the characterization of responce mechanisms to anti-cancer drugs in lung cancer.
I am currently working on two main research projects: the first one aims to explore the possibility to exploit the EGLN1 gene as new therapeutic target in lung cancer, which is supported by a 5-year grant from AIRC (Associazione Italiana Ricerca contro il Cancro). The second one aims to identify molecular determinants that modulate natural killer cells (NK) activity in the tumor microenvironment and cytoxicity towards tumor cells, with a special focus on long non coding RNAs. This project received institutional support through the Bando per la valorizzazione della Ricerca Istituzionale 2021 – Fondi 5 per 1000.
